Cultural Tours Explained

Cultural Tours Explained

Cultural tours, whether they are gulet– or land-based or a combination of the two, are very popular in Turkey, not least because independent touring here is a more forbidding proposition than in comparable cultural destinations like Spain or Italy.

The best tours are adept at avoiding the crowds – at, for example, Ephesus or Göreme’s Open Air Museum – and do all they can to include the undiscovered cultural delights that are such a feature of this country. Groups in most cases are headed by a Turkish guide and a western ‘lecturer’, either a specialist academic, or a well-travelled generalist (like myself), whose job is to further flow of knowledge – and be good company.
