Hotel Kervansaray, Canakkale
Atmospheric Town House. Doubles from £25 B&B
There’s something of the Brooklyn brownstone about the exterior of this old Canakkale town house. The Kervansaray scores on a period patina – wide wooden stairs, spacious foyer with tiled floor and old-fashioned reception desk, secluded garden – that’s rare in Turkish hotels.
Other bonuses are the super-central location just minutes from the Dardanelles ferry and the Wooden Horse, a super-sized stage prop which has been displayed on the waterfront since it was donated to the town by the makers of the movie ‘Troy’. Then there’s the friendly and helpful young staff, and the neighbouring Sardunya (Geranium) Restaurant, a place of eccentric charm and marvellously cheap local wine.
Don’t expect contemporary flourishes from the Kervansaray; be satisfied that the beds, lights, bedroom furniture and bathroom fittings generally soldier on, even if they may be quite as old as the house.
