Kumluova Beach

Kumluova Beach, near Patara

Halfway along the 15-kilometre beach fronting the Xanthos (Eşen) Delta there stand newly-built beach facilities in trendy Nantucket-style clapboard; a café, changing rooms and a lifeguard’s tower. It’s an upgrade by the authorities at the agricultural delta town of Kumluova (Sandy Plain), plainly keen to attract the Patara crowds, and one that certainly trumps the usual gimcrack concrete structures. The approach road through the eucalypts from Kumluova, though lately upgraded, is poorly signposted. A man was sweeping the beach of driftwood when I last visited; beyond the bunker-style finish a pearly surf broke waist-high along a perfect beach.
