Sagalassos, Kibyra and Perge

Sagalassos, Kibyra and Perge

A Short Land Tour: offered as an Add-On to those booked on The Shores of Lycia gulet tour (7-21 June 2024).

Tuesday 4 – Friday 7 June 2024

The fact that we are beginning our June gulet tour near Antalya – east of our usual guleting area – puts us in reach of two magnificent and little-visited inland sites.  What better opportunity to discover Kibyra and Sagalassos, as well as coastal Perge, immediately before your gulet fortnight?

Site gradings in bold indicate how uneven and/or steep the going will be underfoot; A-C are generally manageable, D may well be an issue for some, and E, should you ever come across the designation, is exclusively for goats.

Day 1/Tues 4 June 2024:  Guests are met at Antalya Airport and transferred to their hotel in Antalya’s charming old town.

Day 2/Wed 5 June 2024:  After breakfast we head north on the 2.5-hour drive to Kibyra (B).  This is a fabulous Roman site on a tremendous scale especially famed for its stadium and for the mosaic Medusa floor of its odeon.  After lunch we then drive onto the Sagalassos Lodge where we overnight.

Day 3/Thurs 6 June 2024:  We spend the morning exploring Sagalassos (B/C), another splendid Roman city in the Pisidian mountains.  Sagalassos has undergone an exceptional restoration, not least of its grand nymphaeum (ornamental fountain).  In the afternoon we visit the archaeological museum at nearby Burdur, which is rich in artefacts and statuary from both Sagalassos and Kibyra.  We overnight again at the Sagalassos Lodge.

Day 4/Fri 7 June 2024:  After a morning spent at rest (or back at nearby Sagalassos), we drive down to the coast for Perge (A/B).  This is another monumental city site best known for its grand city gates, its colonnaded streets and magnificently preserved theatre.   After picking up fellow guests at the nearby airport we head for our gulet where dinner awaits.

Our tours are designed and run by us.  We make it our business to be there every time a potential challenge presents, be it on an ancient site or footpath.  But we cannot always be  your eyes; it pays to be aware that the ground is often uneven, not to say steep, with no shortage of rocky protuberances, in Turkey.  You will need a reasonable level of mobility, balance and fitness.  We grade the sites we visit to the best of our ability, but cannot be absolutely sure that all outings and activities will be within the capabilities of all guests.  We expect you to follow our advice if we feel that an outing, or an element of an outing, is beyond you.  If you are the least uncertain as to your suitability to join a tour, we’d urge you to consult us.

Cost: £700 per person sharing rooms, £825 in single rooms.   Price includes all meals, guiding, entry fees, transportation and airport transfers, and tips.  Does not include flights, visas or alcohol.

Your holiday is fully bonded and administered by Heritage Group Travel (www.grouptravel.co.uk) in Bath.  For a small charge Heritage can also assist with your flights.

The trip will only run with sufficient numbers; early indications of interest are much appreciated.
