Su Hotel Bodrum Turkey

Bodrum is a full-on resort, with the traffic, bars and clubs all adding to the hubbub, so it’s a pleasure to discover Turkish Zafer and British Christine’s lovely bolt-hole.  The noise of the busy street diminishes, then disappears, as you follow the mosaic of turquoise fish shoals down a winding alley to this place of winning simplicity: patio, bar and pool surrounded by accommodation on two floors, with the pick of the rooms giving onto the pool and fronted by private lounging areas.  The pool is fringed by palm trees and everywhere are bursts of bougainvillea and hibiscus.  It’s all white in the Bodrum way, with exterior detailing in vibrant red and yellows while the simple rooms, with bright and attractive bathrooms, are picked out in turquoise.

Breakfast is around the pool, as are dinners, though booking is required.  Zafer is a constant and charming presence.  Town is nearby; it’s a ten-minute walk to the harbour and markets or to the great Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.  The only issue (if you can call it that) is the narrow and often busy one-way street that fronts the hotel’s access alley.  Walk it with care, and don’t dawdle while getting into and out of taxis.  But don’t let this put you off; the Su is the pick of Bodrum’s mid-range stays.
