Activity Holidays Explained
Wherever you’re staying you’ll soon find you have easy access to a range of generally good-value activities – sea kayaking, mountain biking, paragliding, trekking, canyoning, hot-air ballooning and others – either through your hotelier or the local agencies. Established operators include Bougainville Travel in Kaş and Seven Capes in Kaş. The activity specialists for Cappadocia are Middle Earth.
UK-based operators including KE Adventure, Explore and Exodus offer dedicated activity holidays in Turkey. Companies including Inntravel and Bespoke Turkey can organise self-guided walking tours along the Lycian Way, providing baggage transfers, detailed route directions and packed lunches between overnight stays in accommodation along the trail.
Guides are friendly and approachable though safety standards are not always as high as they should be, especially on the high-spirited jeep safaris. There was recently a fatal accident involving a tourist jeep near Fethiye. Tourists recently died in a flash flood at Saklikent Gorge. A freak accident involving a hot-air balloon led to a death in Cappadocia some years ago.
