Kale Konak, Üçhısar, Cappadocia
Discreet and Delightful Boutique Hotel. Doubles from £100 B&B
Of all Üçhısar’s recently opened hotels Kale Konak – the Castle Mansion – stands out precisely for its discretion; you would hardly guess at its existence beyond the high walls fringing the narrow lane beneath this troglodytic settlement’s natural citadel.
Beyond the gate, however, a spacious compound littered with cosy terraces and modest lawns furnished with deck chairs fronts stone interiors of labyrinthine charm: kilim-strewn snugs with open hearths for chilly evenings; 15 effortlessly understated and generous cave rooms, and even a small domed hamam (Turkish bath) liberally supplied with huge bars of locally produced olive oil soap and wooden hamam slippers, and available for use at all hours.
The terraces have stupendous views over the famed Pigeon Valley as far as the volcanic cone of distant Mount Erciyes, and the charming and hands-on Apo can arrange typical Cappadocian suppers – the likes of mantı (ravioli) – on request.
